5 Golden Rules of Low Voltage Working
Essential safety principles for electrical work on low voltage systems
Safety Warning
These rules are fundamental safety requirements. Always follow local regulations and company procedures. When in doubt, consult a qualified electrical engineer.
Switch Off and Disconnect
Completely disconnect the installation or equipment from all voltage sources. This includes opening all circuit breakers, removing fuses, and ensuring all supply points are isolated.
Secure Against Reconnection
Prevent unauthorized or accidental re-energization by using lockout/tagout procedures. Apply personal locks, warning tags, and remove operating handles where applicable.
Verify Isolation
Test that the installation is completely de-energized using appropriate voltage detection equipment. Verify the absence of voltage on all conductors and phases.
Apply Earthing and Short-Circuiting
Install temporary earthing and short-circuiting devices to protect against induced voltages, capacitive discharge, and accidental re-energization during work.
Provide Protection Against Adjacent Live Parts
Install barriers, covers, or insulation to protect workers from nearby energized equipment that remains in service during the work activity.
Additional Safety Considerations
Before Starting Work:
- • Obtain proper work permits
- • Use appropriate PPE
- • Verify test equipment functionality
- • Brief all team members on safety procedures
During Work:
- • Maintain constant vigilance
- • Follow established work procedures
- • Never work alone on electrical systems
- • Report any unsafe conditions immediately
